A Lactation Program is Easy and Inexpensive

Companies, large or small, benefit from lactation programs. The essential elements of such a program are simple: 

• PRIVACY - For women who don't have their own private offices a small Lactation Room can be set up.
• FLEXIBLE BREAKS - A lactating mother typically needs to express milk every 3-4 hours for about 15-20 minutes. This usually adds up to less than an hour per workday. The time away from work can be made up by a combination of shortened meal periods, coming in early and/or leaving late.
• EDUCATION - We advise providing pregnant employees with information about continuing to breastfeed when they return to work. Pamphlets, lunchtime prenatal classes, and access to nutrition and lactation consultants can help workers feel supported and prepared.
• SUPPORT - Supportive policies, managers and co-workers help women successfully return to work and send the message to all employees, and to customers, that employee and family health are valued. Management should encourage supervisors to make reasonable accommodations of their workers' breastfeeding goals and encourage a positive and accepting attitude in other employees.
